British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of approach shafts providing entry to the facility... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their courage," he commented. "They were part of thousands of British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate militants who threaten our safety, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the US military conducted what it termed a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
